CG Wood is a highly durable wood material made using sustainable plant-based raw materials to chemically treat Japanese cedar and cypress. This treatment mitigates drawbacks of these woods that can make them difficult to handle, such as warping, cracking, decay caused by rot fungi, and damage from termites, making long-term outdoor use possible. Japanese cedar and cypress are coniferous trees widely planted in Japan, and more effectively utilizing those resources will help revitalize the Japanese forestry industry.
CG Wood is created by impregnating wood with bio-based agents, which are then heated to react within cell walls, making them completely insoluble. This process improves resistance to decay and termites and provides dimensional stability, resulting in highly durable wood. Our raw materials are entirely plant-based, ensuring safety from production through use and disposal, reducing environmental impact.
We began trial production of CG Wood at a pilot plant in Kyoto in September 2024. This proprietary technological research and development is being carried out in collaboration with Kyoto Prefectural University.
CG Wood is a new type of wood that expands the possibilities for wooden expressions in exterior and interior applications such as decks, fences, and saunas. It allows for long-term use of cedar and cypress in areas requiring durability and dimensional stability, and its safe and environmentally friendly properties make it suitable for use in natural settings and places where people gather. The natural texture of this material, which retains wood’s inherent warmth and beauty, can be enjoyed as-is with its changing beige colorations, or the range of expression can be expanded through painting. CG Wood cedar and cypress offer a sustainable new alternative to hardwoods like Ipe and Selangan Batu for outdoor use, as well as oak and ash for indoor use.

About 70% of Japan's land is forested. Around half of that is planted forests, where cedar and cypress trees planted after the Second World War are now reaching harvesting age. However, these planted forests are not being effectively utilized, and a lack of proper care such as thinning has degraded these forests, causing landslides and other serious problems. CG Wood creates new value for cedar and cypress, promoting "plant-grow-harvest-use-replant" cyclical use of planted forests and helping to restore functionality to Japanese forests. Furthermore, using sustainably planted conifers instead of tropical rainforest hardwoods reduces deforestation risks, and long-term use of highly durable construction timber leads to long-term carbon sequestration.
CG Wood thus helps reduce CO₂ emissions by protecting forests in Japan and worldwide and promoting the long-term use of wood.
